Bayeux

Day trip to Bayeux from EddHostel

Day trip in Bayeux? Oh yes it is possible from Edd Hostel, and it takes only 1h50 by direct train! Awesome, right? So let’s get to the point : What to see in Bayeux?

Bayeux is a one of the gem of Normandie, in the state of Calvados. Close from Caen, it is also possible to visit it on a day trip from Edd Hostel, Dol de Bretagne.

Famous historic sites

The historical center of Bayeux, spared during the events of 1944, offers a remarkable architectural ensemble. From the creation of Bayeux to the general de Gaulle’s speech, the anecdoctes, the rich heritage and the curiosity counts 2000 years of an exceptionnal history.

But Bayeux is mostly famous for its Tapestry. Although images of the  Tapestry are familiar to so many of us, being able to see them close up proves a powerful experience. The scale of the work is staggering; it measures just over 70 metres (or 230 ft) in length. This exceptionally ambitious piece of craftsmanship was most likely ordered by William the Conqueror’s half-brother, the warring Bishop Odo. It presents a fascinating, detailed, Norman interpretation of Duke William of Normandy’s conquest of England.

The piece is in fact an embroidery, stitched on linen, rather than a tapestry, which would have been woven. It was probably made in southern England, but for display in Bayeux Cathedral. It is now on show in the imposing buildings of the town’s former Grand Seminary for training priests.

Downtown the cathedral is also a must see. The cathedral was consecrated in 1077, by the bishop Odo of Conteville, William the Conqueror’s half-brother. Between the Norman and the gothic styles, the cathedral reveals its magnificences.

Getting lost in Bayeux center is a good plan to spend a nice day. There’s lots of heritage sites and some nice small shops downtown.

Bayeux is also well located to visit D-Day beaches. BUS 74- 30mins to Arromanches. In Arromanches you will see traces of the WWII. You can also rent a bike to go to Arromanches as it is only 10km from Bayeux. Ask at the tourist office for the cycling routes map.
