GR34 hiking Bretagne

Roadtrip along the coast

Best seaside roadtrip along the coast, between Saint-Malo and Cancale : Summer edition !

Hi eddploreurs, what are your plans for Summer ? Only stay in big cities and visit some famous attraction?  Oh, come on, it’s summertime! Should enjoy the sun, the beauty of the sea and of all the landscape we have in North of Brittany. 🙂

Here is a trip I discovered last week thanks to bus 9 who came from Saint-Malo during Summer. Perfect way to enjoy a roadtrip along the coast, our beaches, and the Breton nature, without car.

Be careful, because the bus 9 is available only during summer !

Can’t wait ! You can still read our article to prepare yourself for summer ! 😉

Start by Dol, of course !

Take a train from Dol-de-Bretagne, where is Edd Hostel, to Saint-Malo. It’s better to start your day early, because you’ll have plenty of things to discover !

If you are curious about Dol-de-Bretagne, I advise you to read some articles like this one. This is a really cute and easy-living city, you will feel like at home here, and the past of the city is really interesting, you’ll be surprised !

First stop : Saint-Malo

I left Dol around 8 am. with the train to go to Saint-Malo. Only 16 minutes for the way and it costs 5€, it’s cheap ! Once in Saint-Malo, from the train station I joined Le Sillon beach, and walked until Intramuros. The view on intra and le fort national is amazing ! It was a lovely day, because of the weather, and we had the chance to have buskers on the street and discover Saint-Malo, in music it’s perfect !

So after, walked around the ramparts to discover the city and it beaches, I couldn’t resist the temptation to eat a Kouign Amann from the famous shop : Les Délices du Gouverneur (Here an explanation of what is our Kouign Amann).

Finally, I spent almost 3h in Saint-Malo, and it’s worth a visit !

Now, let’s go discovering the wild coast between Saint-Malo and Cancale. To join the roadtrip along the coast, I take the bus 9 (bus stop close to the Tourist Office).

Second stop : Le fort du Guesclin

Stop at the Fort du Guesclin, it’s my favorite beach !

Of course, we could swim in all the beaches that you cross on your way, for whom who like swimming it would be a shame not to enjoy swimming in turquoise water. Especially during summer, the water is around 20°, this is perfect to refresh during the hike.

To start the hiking, follow the red and white sign. Don’t worry about this, the path is really well-indicate, you can’t be lost. From Fort du Guesclin to the Pointe du Grouin it’s around 2 hours walking. The path allows you to discover lots of places as Pointe du Meinga – Plage du petit port – Plage du verger – Plage de Saussaye, to finally arrive at Pointe du Grouin. But it’s great all the way, how amazing it is to walk along this beautiful Breton coast !

Third stop : La Pointe du Grouin

Alala, we are arriving in Pointe du Grouin !! One of our pearl in Brittany. It’s really a place which is important for me. I like coming here, to relax, just escape from the real world and just look at the sea. Like me you could walk on the path, just walk on the stone or even have lunch. For me it was my lunch break : a good baguette with cheese, faithful French that I am ;).

La Pointe du Grouin, it also a natural place, where it’s possible to discover the wild local flora. Also, it allows you to have a panorama over the Mont Saint-Michel Bay. If you’re lucky you could even spot the Mont Saint-Michel far away.

4eme stop : Cancale

Then, you can go back to the path GR34 to join Cancale. But don’t forget to have a look on your watch before because between la Pointe du Grouin and Cancale you still have 1h by foot. 🙂

Well-arrived in Cancale, I choose to go to the port to taste the famous oysters from Cancale : After effort comes comfort :p You can read more about Cancale and its specialties in my other article 😉 !

Last step : Come back at Edd Hostel

So, to come back at Edd Hostel, I took the bus 15 to Saint-Méloir-des-Ondes. Check the timetable before, because the schedule changes according to the day. I choose to take the bus in Cancale port, but if you choose to have more breaks you can take the bus directly in Pointe du Grouin or even Port-Pican. It’s about 15-20min. by the roads before arriving in the station. If the bus doesn’t go to the train station you can stop in Saint-Méloir city center and walk 35minutes (3 kilometers).

So happy that Edd Hostel is just located close to the train station in Dol, I walked enough for today !! 😉
