Dol de Bretagne

Dol the mysterious city – guided tour

Today I’ve tried the guided visit “Dol La mystérieuse”

It is not because I live here that I cannot learn more about my home! And actually, I discovered I didn’t know that much about my city. The main goal of this visit is to explore all the secrets that holds this old little town. Let’s explore together the little town of Dol 😉

The Tourist Information is the one organizing the visit. It is available in English too, which is good! During this 2 hours tour I even discovered some streets/shortcuts I didn’t know!

About the guided visit…

You start the visit close by the cathedral. Wandering south of the cathedral, you enter the maze of streets in the old town, and then you arrive in the most important streets of the town! Those are the Grande Rue Stuarts and Rue Lejamptel, and both of them hide a lot of little stories 🙂 You will find many beautiful half-timbered houses in the Grande rue des Stuart. The architecture of some of those houses are from the 11th century! You will be able to see many houses built in traditional granite used in the classical buildings of Brittany.

It’s the occasion for you to learn a lot of secret about the city, and what’s fascinating is that even locals don’t know about some of them! For example, I discovered why the Stuart family of Scotland is so important in Dol de Bretagne, and I actually wrote an article about that! I also discovered why Dol wasn’t destroyed during WWII during the visit 😉

I am not going to detail here all the visit, but I do advise you to do it, for you to discover how rich is the past of Dol De Bretagne!

If you want to do it by yourself…

Dol de Bretagne also propose some non-guided tour, where you just need a map and a leaflet. Ah, and maybe that good old pal Nomino 😉

You can find those tours on the website of the Tourist Information of Dol! You have the choice between 3 different tours, depending of the time you want to spend. The “Escapade” tour is meant for 1 hour and the second one called “Découverte” and last 2 to 3 hours and that’s actually the one I choose when I gave those non-guided visits a try! It’s a pretty complete tour that looks a bit like the guided visit 😉 The third tour called “Révélation” is the longest of them all and last the whole day!

All along the 3 parkours you will find signs, both in English and French, telling you the story about the interesting place and buildings you see. There’s 25 signs as a total if you want to do the “Révélation” tour, and some of them are even outside the city itself!

If you are interested (which could be a nice plan while waiting the bus going to Mont Saint-Michel, or after coming back!), there you will find the link to the website Dol de Bretagne, and more precisely you can also download directly the tour on the link at top right 😉
